Wellington, part 2

Wellington City and Sea Museum

In 1944, 733 Polish children came to Wellington, fleeing from the war.  They stayed in New Zealand and became a part of the community.

Oriental Beach.

Wellington panorama.

View from Mount Victoria.

I was very excited to see the Wellington sign, thinking it would be pretty cool.  We almost gave up looking for it, it looks to be about a foot high.  Very disappointing.

Wellington bay.

Bolton Street Cemetery, 1840-1892.

... in order to make room for the highway.  They dug up the settlers and threw their remains in a mass grave.  Shame on you, Wellington.

Outline of the mass grave.  Not sure I agree with this decision...

View from the cemetery of downtown.  Cable car rails in the foreground.

Back at our free campground.

Sunset!

I arranged for us to have a tour of the supreme Court.  Unfortunately, no photos could be taken as the court was in session (hearing arguments about a tort case).  This is the old High Court, still in use sometimes.
