Red crater.
More views of the stunning Emerald Lakes. Here you can see all 4 of them - three close on the right and the big one in the back left.
The three close ones, each a different shade.
A close-up of the largest of the three.
A path leading to the distant one.
I believe this is the smallest.
Sulfur and other volcanic fumes paint the hillside.
This whole area smells horribly of sulfur.
Glad to have made it out of the hazard zone, at least for tonight!
More of the crater.
Mordor - I mean Rangipo Desert in Oturere Valley.
More solidified lava forms that fell when the red crater erupted.
Uncharacteristically light pumice rocks.
Finally, we can see the hut in the distance! Should be just a little while longer.
Waterfalls near the hut.
Panorama of the three volcanoes, Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe (aka Mount Doom), and Tongariro (which we climbed earlier in the day). Raupehu is actually the tallest of the three by a little bit.
Panorama of one of the Emerald Lakes.
