Lady Knox Geyser and Waimangu Volcanic Valley

We started the next day with a visit to the Last Knox Geyser, which is set off every morning at 10:15.  They add a surfactant (soap) to break the surface tension and make the geyser go off, otherwise it would still go off every day but at unpredictable times.

The geyser was originally discovered by a prison work crew who were clearing brush for a road.  They used the hot water from the geyser to wash their clothes - until one day a prisoner accidentally dropped his soap into the geyser (which was much shorter at that time), resulting in an eruption.

Department of Conservation worker adding the soap.

Please, don't be "that guy".  He wanted to get the whole thing on video (which he will probably never look at again), and obstructed everyone else's view.

The geyser usually goes off for about an hour.

After the geyser we went back to take another look at the mud pools, just down the road.

Next, we toured the Waimangu Volcanic Valley geothermal park.
