Today was the big day - we finally made it for our glacier walk! It is something Caryl had done last time he was in New Zealand, and although we've tried to do different things this time, this was one he really recommended and we decided to repeat. Things have changed though in the last decade or so - the glacier has retreated enough that it is no longer safe to simply walk onto it, it is now required to take a helicopter over the unstable part to walk on the higher part. Translation: it's expensive! But we decided to splurge, and I think it was with it! The helicopter ride alone (a first for both of us) was so cool!
Our chariot awaits!
Off we go!
We made it!
Got our crampons on to facilitate ice walking.
Our fearless guide, Jagged (he shared his mom was a hippie) chopped steps to make it easier to climb.
Thanks J!
The glacier was huge!!! Notice the tiny people at the bottom.
Waterfall with alpaca formation.
Caving.
Today we learned again that ice is slippery.
And cold!
Only one cloud in the sky!
More caves.
Made it through! Crampons help.
The flight back - what a great way to end the trip! We were on the glacier for about 4 hours, an amazing experience!
