Queen Charlotte Track

Our last major activity on the south island was a whole day hike on the Queen Charlotte Track.  The whole track can take up to 4 days, but we figured one day would be enough.  We arranged a ferry to drop us off at the Torea Saddle and pick us up at Punga Cove, an eight hour walk.

Early morning start - waiting for the ferry.

Boat ride!

A map at our starting point - the hike is mainly along the ridge line of the mountains - splendid views.  Lots of steep inclines.

Interesting rocks.

Not quite sure what this was, but it was too big for comfort.

A picnic stop along the way.

Top of Mount Eatwells, a supplementary hike.  As always, the worse the climb, the better the view.

At Punga Grove, a resort on the pebbly beach.  We drank a beer waiting for our ferry (which was 45 minutes late, but we didn't care).

The boat rides were marvelous.  We were excited about our planned ferry ride the next day to the north island - we had booked it for sunset and had heard great things (next post).

Salmon farm - they have a huge problem with seals getting in and eating all the fish.
