Waitaki Valley, New Zealand

We continued our trip south from Christchurch, past Timaru (where we stopped for groceries), to a small campground in Glenavy, just a short distance north of Omaru.  The site was at the mouth of the Waitaki River.  We walked out to the beach twice - once in the evening after getting in and again the next morning before starting our journey along the valley in the direction of Mount Cook.

Scags - super cute birds along the shore.  The beach is made out of pebbles!  All perfectly rounded, all about the same size.  We'd never seen anything like it!

More sheep.

The next morning we saw a seal!  I don't think she/he was as happy to see us as we were to see her!

A flock of beach birds - can you find the seagull amongst them?

They also did not like me.

We picked up about a kilo of Paua shells - they are so pretty!

Taking a rest.

It was cold and windy.

More shags - they are funny birds.

This one was my favorite.  (He's second from the left in the picture above).

After leaving the beach we headed further up the valley to the Elephant Rocks.  They are on private property; of course the property owner has sheep.  The enclosure is open to the public.

Elephant Rock.

Caryl on a rock.

And again.

Yup.  They are big rocks!

And more sheep.

Next tourist sight was the Mauri Rock Drawings.  Very disappointing.  And not very old, either!  They are from the 19th century; first documented by white explorers in 1852.

A European sailing ship... I could do better!

On to Lake Waitaki and Lake Aviemore.

Aviemore Dam.

Benmore Dam, the larger of the two dams.

A really lovely area!
