Kelly, the caretaker of the lovely baby wallaby, works at the store of a nearby Aboriginal community, Belyuen. She very kindly offered to give us a tour, showing us the many buildings and activities available. There are about 200 Aborigines who live here. There was a women's center, an aging care center, a just-started community garden, many homes, and of course the store (which doesn't sell alcohol since many of the residents have a hard time with it). The community is funded by the government, but it seems to me like the people living there, a ferry ride away from Darwin, have very limited employment opportunities. I've thought a lot and talked to many about the plight of the indigenous peoples in Australia; as of yet, I cannot see a good plan for the future.
