Homebush Bay, Sydney

I had heard about some abandoned ships in the Sydney area, and just knew I had to see them!  So Caryl and I look an hour long metro ride out to Homebush Bay.  This area became a ship wrecking yard in 1996.  It was opened to the public in 2003.

On the way to the shipwrecks we passed through Bicentennial Park, the Badu mangroves, and bird habitats.

It was a lovely stroll.

We even saw a few black swans!

The skyline.

Our first, small shipwreck.

Another one!

Up close.

The famous SS Ayrfield is over 100 years old!  It was built in 1911 in the UK and was brought to Sydney the following year.  At one point it was used to transport goods for American troops stationed in the Pacific region during WWII.

Other side!

The wreck and its mangroves are a safe home to many protected migratory bird species.

After checking out the ships we walked over to the Brickpit, part of the Sydney Olympic Park.

The pit, no longer an active brick pit, had a huge elevated circular walkway that didn't make much sense to us.  For example, at various points along the path there were solitary fold out chairs.  No pairs, just individual chairs.

There were several entrance points and lookout terraces.
