Canberra, day 2

We started the day by checking out the mint - they make coins in Canberra, but the bills are made in Sydney.  Caryl bought a new $1 coin for $3, what a deal!

Titan, the strongest automated robot in the southern hemisphere.  He lifts up the huge containers of blank coins and pours them into the counting machine.

On our way out.

The Aboriginal Embassy outside of the Old Parliament building.  They have been here for decades - first they were fighting for Aboriginal land rights, but now it's a more general message for Aboriginal rights and causes.

The Old Parliament building, built as a temporary parliament until they built the new one.

Inside - the house chambers.

The senate chambers.

While in Canberra we were hosted (through couchsurfing) by a lovely couple.  Thank you!!

The SIEV X Memorial - in 2001, a boat with almost 400 refugees sank off the Australian shore.  We don't know exactly why, but no one helped them.  It is theorized that Australia did not want to accommodate more refugees, and the boat was left to sink with everyone on board.  The Memorial commemorates the event - schools and churches from around Australia have each decorated one pole to mark the life of one individual on the boat.

On our last day in Canberra we meet up with more couchsurfing hosts - they showed us around the War Memorial.

Inside the lavishly decorated memorial.

War museum.

Lookout over Canberra.
