Quang Ngai

We had purchased the open bus ticket, and the next leg of the journey was an overnight bus trip from Hoi An to Nha Trang.  We decided against this for three reasons.  First, we wanted to check out some smaller towns off the beaten tourist track.  Second, I wanted to see the Son My Memorial (next post).  And lastly, we both dreaded the thought of doing another overnight bus trip.

So, from Da Nang we took a train down to Quang Ngai, a smaller city with few touristy attractions.  We were only there for a night, but we really enjoyed the city - low key with friendly people and delicious food.  One thing that really amuses me in Vietnam is that there is no concern for copyright law - local stores call themselves Macy's and there are Facebook coffee shops.  Also, knock-off goods are on every corner.  The lack of transparency in quality of goods makes it hard to buy anything - clothes have no labels, so you don't know what materials are used, what size they are, and where they were made.  Makes me appreciate some of the structure in the States (though I admit our copyright laws are far from perfect).  We did have a good laugh at all the phuc dat stores though... (means leather apparel).
