Hue

After a long and arduous overnight bus trip, we finally arrived in Hue.  I do not recommend overnight sleeper buses, especially not in the top row in the back (last seats available next to each other when we got on).  The ride was very bumpy, and every time the driver slammed the brakes (which was a lot) we slid down to the foot of the seat.  Overall, I think I slept for 2 hours total in 10 minute increments.  But, it was an adventure, definitely worth experiencing once.  Our third seatmate was a really nice young Irish lady, so we had a fun chat.

We arrived in Hue in the morning, and spent most of our first day sleeping and relaxing, with a little sightseeing when hunger drove us above ground.  When we recovered, we spent a full day exploring the old city, focusing on the citadel and the forbidden blue city, the old ruler's residence.  The citadel was impressive and huge, a few square kilometers.  Different sections were in ranging states of repair - some buildings were breathtaking and completely restored, while other areas were in ruins.  Judging from all the money they make on entrance fees, I was a little surprised more wasn't being done - especially in terms of landscaping and walkway repair.  For example, cutting the grass and trimming some of the largest bushes would have really improved the aesthetic and ease of sightseeing.  One of the pictures shows a newly restored building right next to an old one - the difference is striking.  It is unfortunate that war and weather have done so much damage.

After the citadel we walked around the old part of Hue, enjoying some delicious street food for dinner.
