From Kuala Lumpur we took a 4 hour bus ride north to the Cameron Highlands. We spent a few nights there, as there was lots to do. First, we went on a few short hikes accompanied by the dogs from our hostel - each dog went on a different walk. First, the female accompanied us to the Parit Falls (we named her Lady) and then the male (nicknamed Tramp) went with us to the Robinson Falls. Lady was afraid to cross the suspension bridge - she was very cute.
The second day we took a 4+ hour hike through the jungle to see the Rafflesia flower, the largest flower in the world. The picture of the small cabbage-looking plant is a baby Rafflesia not yet ready to bloom - they grow for about 18 months and then bloom for about 6 days. The hike there was pretty nice, though the tour guide rushed us a bit - it turned out a front was coming in. Just a few minutes after we reached the flower and took pictures it started to rain. So, we spent the next 2 hours waking through the jungle in the pouring rain - the trail turned into a stream, and both Caryl and I had to stop to pull a few leeches off our feet (in hindsight, sandals were a horrible, terrible idea). We left the jungle tired, hungry, and soaked, but glad to have seen the flower. Was it worth it? Well, no permanent damage, and we didn't catch colds, so I'll say yes.
