Oudong, the City of Past Kings

Oudong is a small city at the base of Phnom Oudong (Phnom meaning hill or mountain).  The ridge of the hill is a monumental necropolis of the past kings of Cambodia.
Oudong was founded by King Srei Soryapor in 1601.  Oudong was later abandoned by King Norodom in 1866 when the king moved the capital to Phnom Penh. Unfortunately, in 1977 the Khmer Rouge destroyed many of the remaining temples, monuments, and structures in the area.

A new stupa being built with a viewing platform.

Old stupa.

A cool looking moth.

Another stupa, probably holding a Cambodian king.

And another one.

A place for worshipping.

More stupas further down the mountain ridge.

And two more.

An amazing view from the lookout terrace.

We decided to walk over and explore the grounds of the Vipassana Dhurak Buddhist Centre.  It was beautiful!  There were very few people here, there was no entrance fee, free toilets.  We had a lovely, relaxing, mindful time.

Monks meditating at the Buddhist center.

In town, a memorial for those killed by the Khmer Rouge containing more human remains.  There were killing fields in Oudong as well.

A garbage truck!
