After a few days in downtown HCMC, we decided to take a local bus to District 5, the old Chinese district. This area is much less touristy, which was nice.
Pictures 1-3: District 5 street market. We tried some of the fuzzy black fruit-nut things. They are a bit sour and squishy. We liked them, but there were bugs mixed in with the fruits, which was a little gross. The pink fruits are dragon fruit. We love them! We now buy them by the kilo and try to eat at least two a day. They taste a bit like kiwis, though inside they are white with black seeds. I highly recommend them.
Picture 4: Hamters for sale!
Pictures 5 & 6: Nha tho Cha Tam Church.
Pictures 7-10: Cho Binh Tay (main market in District 5). I tried to use the bathroom here - it was literally a room with a drain along the wall with women lining up to squat and pee, and a woman who was sloshing buckets of water all over the floor. I didn't even make it into the room, took one peek and bolted (still paid my 2.5 cents though).
Pictures 11 & 12: Interesting dragon fountain in the center park.
Pictures 13-19: Quan Am Pagoda.
Pictures 20-25: Phuoc An Hoi Quan Pagoda.
