Ogrodzieniec Castle

Our last trip was to Ogrodzieniec, the ruins of a medieval castle that was pillaged by the Swedes in 1702 and never rebuilt.

On our drive to the castle, we witnessed a pretty bad car accident. On a small, two-lane winding road, a passenger car, driving way too quickly, didn't see a van ahead of him and at the last second tried to pass. But because we were in the oncoming lane, he decided to accelerate and pass on the right. Well, he was unable to finish the maneuver, as a tree was in his way. This was the end result:

Thankfully, the driver survived with only a broken leg and partially amputated ear. However, while in the hospital, he tried to blame the van driver. So, since we were witnesses to the accident, the Olkusz police asked us to give statements. The police officers (who were actually pretty nice) said that, with our statements, the van driver would have his name cleared, and the other driver would get a fine for reckless driving (in addition to a totaled car and a hospital bill). I think justice was served....

Anyway, we finally made it to Ogrodzieniec:

After seeing the ruined castle we drove by another castle, Pieskowa Skala. Both are part of what is called the Eagles' Nest Trail, a group of castles all built on top of rocky hills, like eagles' nests. We also saw a rock formation called Hercules's mace nearby:

And finally, on our way home we stopped by the Chapel on the River in Ojcowie:
