Essaouira, Morocco (part 2 of 3)

For our second night in Essaouira, Simo invited us to spend some time with his friends on one of the docked fishing boats. There are several types of boats here. The smallest boats are used to catch the largest fish like sharks and eels. The medium sized boats catch sardines, and I don't remember what the largest ones catch, maybe shrimp? The sardine boats are all owned by the same company which hires men to do the fishing. If I got the story right, up to 40 men leave early in the morning for 12 hours at a time. At night, the boats are docked in the marina. In order to make sure nothing happens to them, men are hired to spend the night on the boat. They make sure the boats aren't rubbing together, or if there's a storm, sometimes they need to take the boats out so they don't get damaged.

When we got there, the guys were about ready to eat dinner - they had caught and cooked some huge crabs. While I usually don't eat crabs, I made an exception and tried some - tasted crabby. Caryl and I agree they were very good. We had a lovely evening - drinking mint tea, petting pregnant boat kitties, and trying desperately to communicate with our lovely hosts. To top it off, they caught some fish and squid for us which we took back and cooked in a tajin, a traditional Moroccan clay pot. It was delicious and well worth the wait.
