Agadir, Morocco

First picture at the Agadir airport; love this country already!!!

Agadir is a relatively large city known mainly for its beautiful beaches. It is a great vacation destination and is also a main seaport for Morocco. Most of the city is new and modern; this is because in 1960 a major earthquake demolished the city. Nearly a third of the inhabitants perished, approximately 15,000 people. 70 percent of the city was in ruins, including all of the ancient part of the city. Because of the vastness of the destruction, the unusually high temperatures, and the lack of infrastructure and resources, the rescue operation was very challenging. Disease and vermin, as well as looters, quickly overtook the area. The government ordered an evacuation of Agadir, and made the hard decision to cover the area with lime, DDT, and rat poison to prevent the further spread of disease. It was then bulldozed and covered. This area, north of the present day city of Agadir, has been left untouched to respect the dead.

Since the earthquake, the city has rebuilt and has over half a million inhabitants.

We stayed at a lovely hotel for a few nights, enjoying the kitchenette and low season quiet:

We wandered to the market:

Caryl enjoying the olives:

We cooked dinner:

With French pastries for dessert!

And of course, a trip to the famous beach:

God, country, and our king:

And one more:
